Gems come in virtually every color of the spectrum, but just one gem variety can have many different hues. For example, Sapphire is generally thought of as a blue gem, but they are also available in yellow, pink and a range of other colors.
Available in many hues, gems can be surprisingly affordable. Prices are affected by factors such as rarity, durability and popularity. Lesser-known gems can be quite beautiful and fit just about any budget.
For every gem variety, color is the most important factor for value. In addition to hue, a color’s tone and saturation are important as well. Brighter, more vivid colors with a medium hue are generally the most sought after. Of course, color preference is personal, and the most popular may not be what you’re looking for.
Gems will look different depending on the light source. Always look at a gem you’re considering purchasing under different lights, especially the type of light you plan to wear it in most.
Clarity is another important factor in judging quality. Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions in gemstones. Generally, the fewer inclusions the better the gem. However, unusual inclusions, or inclusions that work well with light can actually add value.
Cut is what unleashes the brilliance and beauty of gems. Cut refers to both the shape of the gemstone and the quality of the cutting. To judge a cut, look at how the gem returns light to the eye. The best cuts are symmetrical and return light across the entire surface of the gem, with no dark or washed-out areas.
